"Wielding Wise Words" Proverbs 18:21

I. Taming the tongue                                                                             (introduction)

“Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits.”                    Proverbs 18:21

“Words are powerful. As the Scriptures indicate, they can create and destroy, build and burn down, save and condemn. The triune God created and upholds us by His Word, redeems us by re-narrating our lives by His gospel, and directs us by His commands so that our words become more conformed to His Word. These many facets of verbal communication – both divine and human – are displayed in one rich and enriching jewel. Faith and practice are wonderfully integrated in this collection of godly wisdom."            Michael Horton

“The intent is to get wisdom and commit our lives to wise godly living out of a reverent affection for the Lord. It will be reflected in our speech.”

     A. Blessing and cursing

“Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.”                         Ephesians 4:29

“…from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.”                                                                                                             Ephesians 4:16

I. Finding Wisdom in an age of Adolescence

“Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.”

“Well done is better than well said.”

“By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.”

“Honesty is the best policy.”

     B. Essence

Proverbs is not at all the same as the Law or the Prophets. The Law and the Prophets lay their stress on the covenant people as a whole, called to show the world what restored humanity can be; Proverbs focuses on what such restoration should look like in day-to-day behavior and in personal character… In the covenantal framework of Proverbs, it denotes “Skill in the art of godly living.”            Garrett & Harris

III. Begin to unlock it                                                                                        (Proverbs 1:1-7)

“…the rules of the Lord are true, and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold; sweeter also than honey and drippings of the honeycomb."                                                                                                                                Psalm 19:9-10

"A Father's Wise Heart" Proverbs 4

I. Glorious hand-off

“Who are the successors we are preparing to stand on our shoulders and build on the foundations we have laid – as our fathers did with us?... It’s not happening.” George Barna

Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart.  You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.                                                                                                             Deuteronomy 6:4-9

II. Get wisdom

     A. Source and benefits

     B. Wrong place to look

     C. Guard it well

And he said to them, “Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one's life does not consist in the abundance of his possession."  Luke 12:15

And he said, “What comes out of a person is what defiles him. For from within, out of the heart of man, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery,  coveting, wickedness, deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride, foolishness. All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person.”       Mark 7:20-23

III. Growing wise hearts

“The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple…”     Psalm 19:7

“And so, from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding…" Colossians 1:9

“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.”    James 1:5
